One of the beautiful landmarks in the city of St. Augustine is the "Bridge of lions". The bridge is a double-leaf bascule bridge that spans the Intercostal Waterway. As a part of the A1A, it connects downtown St. Augustine to Anastasia Island; across Matanzas Bay. A pair of Medici lions made of marble guard the bridge. Construction on the bridge began in 1925 and was completed in 1927.
For this painting, I needed to get just the right angle...
My vision was to accentuate the statue of the Medici Lion sculpture, giving it a sense of greater strength and larger than life presence. At the same time I wanted to join that aspect with an underlying tone of the lion's gaze intently scanning the distance ready to pounce and protect against any oncoming danger. Enjoy!
